My daughter, Haylee Kate, was diagnosed with APML Leukemia, which is a rare form, on November 21, 2011 at 8 years old. I thought this would be a good way for me to get my thoughts and feelings out and to let others know about her ups and downs throughout her treatment.

6/6/12 - AR-C is no fun

Haylee's 2nd round of AR-C (the high dose Cytarbine) may prove to be a nasty round.  It's still too early to tell but with how she was today...I can foresee it happening.
Around 9pm or so last night, she mentioned that her throat was hurting a little.  Since her nurse (Linnea) was busy with another patient at the time, Britney (another nurse familiar with Haylee), came in to check her throat.  She said she saw a few white spots and would tell Linnea what she saw.  Linnea came in to check her throat a little bit later but Haylee was already asleep.  I know the AR-C can cause fevers and we also discussed the possibility of strep.  Around 12am, Linnea came in for vitals and Haylee had began running a fever of 102.  Linnea called the attending to let him know and ask what he wanted her to do next.  He said to draw blood cultures and give her Tylenol but not to strep test or start any unnecessary antibiotics yet (she's on one already).  He felt like the fever was related to the AR-C.  Haylee's fever broke around 2:30am, thankfully.
She was up and down all night because of all the fluids she's hooked up to.  She will have to stay on the fluids until Saturday or so because the fluids flush out the AR-C instead of it just sitting in her bloodstream.  She's miserable having to constantly be hooked up to an IV pole and having to stay near a bathroom because the urge hits her so often.  The only time she's allowed to be unhooked is for a bath so we drag it out a little (shh! don't tell!).
We finally woke up around about 10am.  Haylee got up and brushed her teeth but then climbed right back into bed.  She was feeling pretty crummy this morning.  The clowns came in to cheer her up some - it worked for a minute.  When they left, she asked if she could stay in the bed all day.  Sooo unlike her!  I was able to get her to order some lunch around 11:30am but she wasn't interested in eating at all.  She was nauseous all morning (she kept the pink puke bowl in the bed with her), her head was hurting, and she was really lethargic.  Jill, her day nurse, brought her in some Tylenol for her head and she went back to sleep around 12:30pm.  Jill checked her temp when she gave Haylee the Tylenol and she was starting to get a fever again.  It was very low grade - about 99.5 so the Tylenol was given just in time.
Adam showed up to visit and bring some things we forgot but she slept during most of the visit.  She finally woke up a little after 2pm, just as he was leaving so she was able to see him for a minute.  She decided she was hungry then and ate 6 saltines while I walked out with Adam.  I was glad to see she had a bit of an appetite back.  She also finally ate a little of her lunch when I got back.
Jill unhooked her for a bath before the evening dose of AR-C.  We got that done and she acted more like the Haylee we know and love - chatty, silly, and giggly!  She was still lethargic in the sense that she wasn't really feeling like being out and about but a major turnaround from this morning, nonetheless!
She was hooked up to the AR-C around 5pm, we had dinner (which she ate), Skyped with Adam and Mason, and just hung out the rest of the night.  Adam called us to let us know that America's Funniest Home Videos was on so we watched it  - and we laughed and laughed.  It was nice to laugh at other people expense!! Haha!  After sleeping in this morning and napping again this afternoon, she went back to sleep for the night around 10:30pm.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day!  There's a good bit of stuff going on tomorrow so it shouldn't be so boring.

The fundraiser is still going on!!  We really would like to reach our goal to ensure that all of our financial obligations are well taken care of.  Please promote through Facebook, Twitter, and through email to get the word out!!!  Thanks!
